Creating A Wild Garden: 3 Things To Do To Encourage Plant Growth

Wild gardens, or wilderness gardens, are perfect for the current climate. Bugs and critters need more space to themselves as a result of issues like deforestation and pesticides – turning your garden into a wildlife paradise can help to resolve the problem.

However, you might have also noticed that it can be difficult to turn a manicured lawn and freshly varnished decking into something wild and jungle-like. Where do you even start if you want to encourage diverse plant life to grow again? If you use the three tips down below, you’ll put yourself on the winding garden path to success

Keep the Lawn Long

If you were thinking of getting the lawn mower out over the weekend, put a hold on those plans right now! The lawn needs to be long and left to grow as much as possible. When the grass starts looking similar to a wheat field, you can be sure there’ll be all kinds of wildlife making their home in the reeds below.

While you might not quite like the look, as this growth takes some getting used to, it’ll definitely save you some time and effort over the course of the year.

Cut Back Bush and Tree Overgrowth Regularly

The lawn needs to be left as long as possible, but when it comes to bigger plants like bushes and trees, cutting them back at least once a year (and some regular trimming in between) is essential. A spot of tree trimming not only keeps the main trunk healthy, but it ensures new growths come out every spring.

Even better than that, it’ll ensure these new branches, leaves, and offshoots are the strongest of the bunch as well. If you have tall trees in your garden that are hard to reach, and/or you’re not sure what parts of the plant need cutting off, hire a professional to cultivate for you.

Plant Proactively

If you plant before the weeds crop up, and before the wind blows in any kind of seed imaginable, you’ll have a much wilder garden than if you just let nature take its course. After all, with the latter, you can never be sure what you’re actually going to get! Of course, you can leave some room in the soil for touches of true wilderness, but if you want plenty of diverse plant growth, get down in the dirt yourself.

Whether you’re working with raised beds, natural borders, or you’re just planting wherever you like, pop down as many different seeds (and complementary seeds) as you can. You can even slip a few fruits and vegetables in there, if you want to cook with your own ingredients come the summertime time. No matter what you choose, just remember: you don’t want there to be a patch of ground left untouched by your trowel!

A wild garden, ironically, can be hard to cultivate. However, the more time you spend encouraging specific wild plant growth, the more critter homes you’ll end up building.

  • I do keep my yard trimmed but I do keep my grass a bit longer than my neighbors do. Mine typically looks better because it’s not too short.
