DEWEY – Giveaway
How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can’t even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.
Dewey’s story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.
As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.
Vicki Myron was born on a farm fifteen miles from Spencer, Iowa. At the age of thirty-four, after a failed marriage, single motherhood, and a stint on welfare, she graduated summa cum laude from Mankato State University and has a masters degree from Emporia State University. She worked at the Spencer Public Library for twenty-five years, the last twenty as director. She lives in Spencer, Iowa.

My first special cat was back in the 50s. Mittens – small, but she had all the dogs in the neighborhood scared to come near her!

I have had a few special cats in my life. I had 3 blue point himalayans, Brutus- Sampson, Rambeau (spelt that way because I bought him in Montreal….lol), and Priscilla. They were absolutely gorgeous, and had "interesting" personalities!

Right now I have three special cats: Charley (names after John Steindbeck's poodle, Charley), Blacky, and Micky Mouse. My most special cat was LeLoup, a Maine Coon, who died at the age of 16 years on February 8, 2008 of cardiomyopathy. I still think of him everyday. He ruled this house and had a "bigger than life" personality.

I once owned a cat named Snagglepuss. He was a tabby and had a bit of a mean streak in him but was also very lovable. He sure was different but I loved him!

My special cat passed away last year at 16..We adopted him from the shelter at 11 months. He was the most tolerant cat I have ever had. He put up with dogs and kittens even though he had been declawed (before we got him).

Yes I have a special cat in my life now, his name is David, he was born without working hips, and abandoned with his brothers in the parking lot of a vets office, they eventually were able to catch him and help him. He can't jump more than a foot he has stairs to get on the bed, and the couch he likes to sit on his rear end with his back against a pillow like he's a person. When someone comes to the front door he growls and stand in front of me to– protect me.

[email protected] I sooo want to win this. I have had several wonderful rescued strays in my life. Chloe, Jasmine, Misty, all elderly cats I took in from the cold, and who lived out their lives with us. Misty especially was like a dog, came when you called her, followed us around, super friendly.
Her name is Juniper…a 12 year old runt-of-the-litter gray Persian who thinks she's a person!

I had a wonderful cat named Ms Punkin who was 6 weeks old when I got her and who lived to the ripe old age of 18. I miss her dearly.
I have never had a cat but I do love animals and reading! Would love to win a copy of this book! 🙂

I have a cat now–the first one I've ever owned! My mom is allergic, so I could never have one when I was growing up. My cat is a crazy daisy, but I couldn't imagine life without him tearing up and down the hall and meowing. 🙂

I have a loving, magical friend in my cat. His name is Zeus. My son adopted him on a stormy day when I was away on travel. Zeus came along at the right time for me as it was a time that I lost my very first cat, Midnight. I so loved Midnight, he was special as well. Zeus has become my buddy and always makes my day as he greets me at the door every evening and sees me off to work in the morning.
