Discover The Average Cost Of Moving House
Statistics suggest that people are moving home less often than previously. Part of this is due to the fact people are staying at home for longer. That’s a direct result of steadily increasing house prices and the inclination to settle down later in life.
But, regardless of the figures, people do still move. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your first home, you’re upsizing, downsizing, or simply relocating, moving house means packing all your belongings up, ready for transportation.
It’s natural to want to know the cost before you move. However, it can be difficult to know the exact price as there are many variables. On average the cost will be between $500-$2000.
In this post we share how to discover the average cost of moving house.
Do It Yourself
The cheapest option is to move yourself. This is often the preferred option if you are moving out of a parent’s home and into your first home. When moving into your first place you won’t have a huge amount of belongings. That’s why it’s a good idea to pack your car up or rent a small van and do it yourself.
In this case, it costs you time and perhaps the rental cost of a van, that’s likely to be less than $100.
Of course, if you’re planning to move yourself from one home to another then you may need a much larger van or more than one van. That can make it harder to do it yourself and the associated costs will rise.
Going Professional
The best option, but probably the most expensive, is to find the best removalists Sydney and get them to move your belongings for you.
The exact cost of this will depend on several variables:
- Packing or not
Professional removalists will generally offer a packing and non-packing service. The packing service means they put all your belongings into boxes, load the van, and move the boxes into your new property. It’s the most expensive option but generally hassle-free.
Alternatively, they will supply you with the boxes and you can pack your own, items. They simply load and unload the van. This is cheaper than the full packing service. But, there may be a charge for the boxes.
- Size of your home
Naturally, the size of your house makes a difference. The larger your house the more expensive the move is likely to be. After all, that means you’ll probably have more items and you’ll need more manpower/a bigger van.
- Distance being moved
The cost of fuel is steadily rising, contributing to higher costs the further you move from your current home. Alongside this, you’ll need to cover the cost of the time it takes the labourers to move, this pushes the cost of moving up further.
Don’t Forget Insurance
If you have opted for the complete package then it’s likely the removal company will give you the insurance you need. But, if you’re doing it yourself it’s advisable to take out insurance, simply to protect your belongings. Of course, this increases the price of moving but it’s cheaper than having to pay to replace everything.
There are plenty of variables when it comes to the cost of moving. That’s why you need to consider the right option for you before you decide what to do.
It can be costly just to move it for sure. I would probably do this myself just to try to save as much as I can.
It can be expensive. Thankfully my husband is in the military so our moving costs were always covered.
Moving is expensive but there are things I’m willing to pay for. Hiring movers was one of the best decisions and I’d do it again!
We have moved way too many times and it has mostly been a Uhaul truck. One time my husbands work paid for movers.
When moving from a house to another you definitely need help, I think it’s better a professional help!
I think it’s a great idea to hire movers. It eliminates the feeling of being a burden to family and friends. I’m glad that you also suggested insurance because accidents happen during moves all the time.
I know it can be costly to move, well I got lucky cause I got 4 brothers who always help me and my husband. Thanks to them, they only want beer lol
I’ve never been able to afford someone to move me I’ve always had to do it myself.
We’ve helped our son and daughter-in-law move several times, it seems to get tougher with each move, probably because they have more stuff, and we keep getting older! Thankfully, they seemed to have found their dream house, so I don’t think they will be moving anytime soon.
There are so many hidden costs to moving. When we moved two years ago, I know we paid at least 2500. It was a local move but the cost of down payments, deposits and those hidden costs can quickly eat into your budget.
Moving is an expensive venture. I am always trying to downsize the amount of stuff we have and keep clutter and “stuff” in check. I don’t want to end up with so much junk that we have to move someday.
