Feline Faux Pas That Every Loving Cat Owner Must Avoid

Whether you’ve recently adopted a kitten or been a cat owner for years, you’ll be eager to do the best for your furry friend. However, intentions only get you so far and it’s vital that you avoid the common pitfalls that could have a negative impact on your pet.

Focus on avoiding the five listed below to help maintain your cat’s health and happiness for the long haul. Puurfect.

1| Not Creating Comfortable Surroundings

Cats are notoriously more independent than dogs and will spend more time outside than other pets. Nevertheless, you must appreciate the fact that your cat needs comfortable home surroundings. A warm and dry living space is pivotal while pet-friendly rugs make a huge difference too. They also need to feel comfortable with other household members, including humans and other pets.

If you ignore the influence of the home, it’s likely that your cat’s behavior will take a negative turn.

2| Ignoring Health Issues

All pets will experience some health issues over the years. Like humans, cats can often recover from minor problems naturally through rest and the right choice of supplements. When your pet shows signs of chronic or serious health complaints, though, a quick response is essential. Visiting a professional animal hospital will allow your beloved cat receives the best care available.

If you want to support your cat’s lifespan and quality of life, leaving health issues untreated is not an option.

3| Not Using ID Tags

Cats are excellent navigators and have great memory skills, which is why they can often find their way home with ease. Still, cats can go missing or become injured in an accident. With this in mind, using an animal ID app to register your pet’s details is ideal. A collar that features a QR code can help people who find your cat get in touch. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

This allows you to limit the impact of an ordeal. The benefits extend to you as well as your furry friend.

4| Removing Your Cats Claws

Grooming is important for all pets. Many owners will clip their cat’s claws too short for the aesthetic and to avoid scratching. Sadly, this can also leave your cat without a weapon should they get into a fight. It also harms their ability to climb trees and escape danger. While regular clipping and management is advised, you must avoid going over the top or removing the claws completely.

Of course, you will still need to train your cat so that they do not lash out at you. Consistency will yield the desired results.

5| Overfeeding

As a loving cat owner, you want to ensure that your pet has enough nutrient-heavy foods. However, it’s equally vital to avoid overfeeding, especially as felines are great at scavenging outdoors. On a similar note, you may need to avoid giving milk to adult cats. Many will become unable to process lactose. Continuing to consume it can lead to a range of problems like vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pains.

Furthermore, overfeeding will lead to obesity, which also brings chronic joint pains. You owe it to your cat to monitor their intake.

  • Oh gosh, we probably overfed one of our cats. She’s so fat! But we would never declaw! That’s so inhumane.

  • I know some people think fat cats are so cute but I wish they knew how serious it was for their health. Thankfully I’m married to a vet so he does a great job making sure our cat is healthy.

  • This is great advice. We are all careful around mum’s cat Roxi. She was a rescue so was already very nervous when they got her. When I look after her for them I always check everything is as she likes it from her surroundings to her food. She’s a pampered little Princess that one. We do watch what we feed her and don’t give her anything that might make her ill foodwise. Little miss has a chip so we won’t lose her.

  • Great tips here and the tip to no overfeed your cat is key. The directions on how much to feed your cat, on the cat food bag, should be followed. I learned the hard way as I always made sure I had food in my cats bowl at all times and he ended up with diabetes when he grew older… he I doing well now but it could have been avoided and now he is on a strict diet.

  • I acquired a cat last year when my daughter had to move for work and couldn’t have him. I was so worried he would get lost, I put a tracker on his collar. One day he did not seem to be moving so I went to look. Found the collar without the cat! Needless to say, he found his way back. It was reassuring though to have the tracker in the early days.

  • Love these tips and I never thought of having my cats claws removed. It is so cruel and you are leaving them without that built in protection that they could need at some time. I believe it is illegal in some states to declaw your cat now.
