How to Puppy-Proof Your Home

A new pet becomes another member of the family, just as you would childproof your home to make it safe when you have a newborn or a toddler, you will need to make the same arrangements when you get a puppy.

Puppies are curious and energetic by nature. In order to avoid frustration, you will need to puppy-proof your home. Puppy proofing your home not only increases your enjoyment of your new pup but also decreases the chances that your pet will get hurt.

Here is a look at how you can puppy-proof your home.

Deal with Electrical Chords

Electrical cords are dangerous for puppies not only because they run the risk of getting an electrical shock but because they may wrap the cords around their neck and choke themselves.

They may also wrap the cord around their feet, causing them to fall and break bones. Electrical cords can also cause burns on your puppy’s mouth when they chew them.

Feeding at the Dining Table

Most puppies like to beg at the table, this is just a natural instinct. However, you should not feed them table scraps. This gives them improper training and they may end up eating food that is not good for them.

Feed your puppy with food that is made for dogs. There are quality brands like Fresh pet that provide delicious and nutritious food for pets. You can check out Freshpet reviews to hear about what other dog owners have to say.

However, no matter what food you give your puppy, just remember that feeding your dog from the table is something to avoid.

Cleaning Supplies

Some cleaning supplies look like water. If your pet somehow manages to turn over a container and the liquid is poured out they might be tempted to lick it.

You should also keep your toilet lids closed when you have a puppy. Puppies are very curious and they may climb into the toilet or try to drink the water.

Beware of Small Items

As mentioned before puppies are curious about everything. This means that small objects can present a choking hazard

Paper clips, jewelry, coins, and rubber bands are things that puppies may be attracted to and want to find out more about. This may cause them to swallow hazardous objects.

Be Careful with Medication

Medication should be stored away in a safe place. A puppy who sees a pill bottle that is open is likely to take his paw, turn it over and sample some of the pills.

This can have deadly consequences. Try as much as possible to keep all medication out of the reach of children.

A Safe House

Puppy proofing your home is a necessity, when you bring a new pup into your home. Puppies require training, once they start growing up and understand what they should and should not do you will be able to relax some of your safety measures.

Until then, you have to be extra vigilant about keeping them safe in your home.
