I am so lucky to have a guest post today from

Susan Kearney – Author of Lucan

This was the question that I asked her:
“Why do you think paranormal/fantasy romance genre has become so popular?”
And here is Susan’s answer:

Alpha heroes!  Seriously, we can’t write Alpha heroes in contemporary romance because it’s not politically correct.  In real life, normal women don’t want a man who kidnaps them and takes them into danger.  However, fantasy is different than real life.  And to make a fantasy work, it’s easier to make the world a different place.  If there are vampires or dragons or aliens, it’s not real, hence we don’t feel threatened—so we can enjoy the fantasy.

In LUCAN, the hero is rough, tough, and tender.  The man makes for one exciting read.  But when he flies across the galaxy to Pendragon on a quest to save all of mankind, he becomes larger than life, more exciting.  And when he meets a lady dragon shaper, the High Priestess of Avalon, we root for them to come together because the odds are so against them.

Now quite frankly if a real person morphed into a dragon and breathed fire at me, I’d be running and hiding.  But reading about Lucan is safe.  I can enjoy the adventure without risking getting burned.  And the fantasy becomes delicious as I delve into a new world and a new lover.

In a fantasy, women can experience falling in love all over again, every time they read a good romance book.  And reading about falling in love with dangerous men is exciting—especially from the safety of our living room couches.  I’ve never wanted to cross the desert in a covered wagon, but reading about how the west was settled is fascinating.  I shudder to think about being stalked . . . and yet enjoy a good romantic suspense story.  I might not want to spend years in a space ship traveling across the galaxy but if I can read about different worlds, different peoples, different cultures what could be better?

And while the difficulties my heroes and heroines face are like none that you will ever face, their emotions are just like ours.  These characters have hopes and fears and dreams.  They want to love and be loved—no matter what planet they are from.  And the essence of good story telling is writing about how my characters react to danger—whether it comes from outside sources or their own hearts.
