Moving Home With A Pet

Moving house with children is tricky, but it can become more challenging pretty quickly when you add pets into the mix. It’s difficult because although we can explain to them what is happening – they probably don’t understand most of what we say.

With that communication barrier, it can be tricky for your pet to understand why they are saying goodbye to their favorite bit of dirt in the yard or why their stuffed toys are in a box.

So how can you make it easier on your pet when you move into pet-friendly apartments?

Routine

If your pet gets fed at 6 am, walked or played with at midday, and then fed again at 17.00, then you have to keep to that schedule as much as possible. They know when they should expect food, and it can be worrying for them not to be fed on time.

If you are moving to a new time zone, then take the time to help them adjust to a new routine but slowly move the breakfast, walk, and dinner.

The more you can stick to their routine, the more at home and settled they will feel.

Pets go-bag

Very similar to packing a bag that has your essentials like tea bags, coffee, milk, and toilet paper – pack one for your pet. Make sure to have plenty of items that smell like you and them so that a familiar smell isn’t far away in the new house.

It’s not only great for your pet, but it means that you won’t have to go on a search mission to find what you need – instead, it will be right there when you need them.

Pet space

When you viewed the apartment or house for the first time, you probably carefully pegged out a place for them. Before they arrive, make sure that their bed is there. Putting the bed somewhere means they have somewhere to retreat to if they are feeling overwhelmed and the most likely are feeling more than a little wobbly.

Perhaps you aren’t sure where they will go yet – you can set up a space just for now, and once they are a little bit more settled, you can move them to somewhere a bit more permanent.

Big hugs

Your pet is going to look to you for a lot of reassurance, and what that means is you’re going to need to give it. Even when you are busy trying to move a sofa or carry delicate electricals up some stairs, your pet is going to be begging for some attention.

A few moments of reassurance will have them feeling much better – but expect it to happen a few times throughout the day.

Anxiety

Some animals are more prone to anxiety than others, and if you have a natural worrier on your hands, then it can be worth heading to the vet so that you can get something to help them feel better.

There are kinds of music, collars, medications, plug-ins, and even therapy to help your pet get through this tough time.

  • When I was a kid, my dad was in the military, so we moved around a fair amount. Our dogs seemed to take it in stride, but we always took a tour of the house before the movers arrived. The dogs loved running from room to room and sniffing everything. Since we always moved in the summer, I think it helped the dogs transition, too, since they had most of the humans home with them for several weeks or months before school started.
