Dear Libby, many thanks for inviting me to write for your blog, and for the kind review of The Legacy of Pemberley, you have posted.
As you will see in the author’s note to this final volume of the Pemberley Chronicles series, we have spanned a period of over fifty years since Elizabeth Bennet married Mr. Darcy and moved from her modest home in Hertfordshire to live at Pemberley.
In that period, which takes in the Regency, the Georgian and most of the Victorian eras of English history, many political and social changes have taken place, affecting the lives of all the people of Britain and those of the Pemberley families. When we began the chronicles, the intention was to “follow the lives of Jane Austen’s characters, as they faced the challenges of a dynamic new century” and in doing that, we told the stories of the Darcys, the Bingleys, the Gardiners, Fitzwilliams and Collinses as well as other characters, who are drawn into their circle, by marriage, friendship or business connections.
In each new volume, while retaining the strong links with Elizabeth and Darcy, new characters were added- Jonathan and Emma Bingley and their families, Colonel Fitzwilliam and his wife Caroline and others like Emily Gardiner. Cassandra and Richard Gardiner and Becky Tate to name a few.
It was easier to develop the characters and stories of the next generation, because they were not Jane Austen’s original characters, with whom one had to be very careful. It was possible to be more flexible and stretch the boundaries further with the new characters. They reflected the changes that were taking place in Victorian society, opening up the possibilities for women to play more significant parts, which could be used in drawing the plotlines for the novels.
This was important in developing the series, and the younger men and women begin to play a more prominent part in their families and communities. Characters like Caroline Fitzwilliam, Darcy Gardiner, and Becky Tate are all involved playing influential roles shaping the lives of their communities. Their successes and failures, their romantic adventures, the happiness or sorrow they experience are all part of the fabric of the Pemberley Chronicles.
However, in the end, the main interest returns to Pemberley, which dominates the landscape as well as the lives of the people who live and work there. Inevitably, as Mr Darcy ages and becomes a kind of “elder statesman” of the family, Elizabeth and he take a back seat and the younger generations carry the action forward. They are always conscious of their duty to maintain the traditions of Pemberley; some do, others don’t.
This is demonstrated in the The Legacy of Pemberley, where all the characters reflect in their various ways the values of Pemberley- in their work and their lives. The three parts of the novel are separate but linked through the theme of the legacy of Pemberley. Whether it is young Darcy Gardiner discovering the truth about his distinguished cousin- William Courtney, Caroline Fitzwiliiam learning to enjoy the solitary life after the death of her husband or the tender romance of young Laura Ann, the granddaughter of Darcy and Elizabeth, which touches the hearts of the entire family- they are all part of the great story of Pemberley.
It seemed like an appropriate time to draw the saga to its conclusion.
I realise that many readers will be disappointed- some have already written to complain! It is hard for a writer to leave her characters after ten very enjoyable years, but it felt right. Although I may dream of returning to the groves of Pemberley one da—if I do, it will be in a very different time.
