The Joys of Parenting –Tips for Toddler Care & Development
Parenthood can be more than a little challenging; when baby comes into this world, it is all about feeding changing and bathing; just when you master this, junior becomes mobile and that changes everything. Anything lower than a metre needs to be toddler-proofed, as your child begins to explore the world around them and if your baby is almost at the crawling stage, here are a few tips.
~Encourage exploration – Of course, you are always close by, but it is OK to allow your child to safely explore, this is part and parcel of interacting with their immediate environment and exploration involves learning. The first 7 years are known to be the formative ones and if you encourage enquiry, your child will develop in a wholesome way.
~ Encourage Expression – It is important for a young child to express themself and there are many ways that you can help. Teach your son or daughter simple nursery rhymes and try to engage them with song and movement. When he or she has a tantrum, don’t give it your attention, which will discourage this type of behavior.
~ Have realistic expectations – A common mistake for new parents to make is comparing their offspring with other kids of similar age; every human being is unique and the pace of development can vary greatly. If you think your toddler might be facing difficulties, there is ABA therapy in Sydney, which can really help, especially when a child is diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.
~ Positive behavior reinforcement – The most effective way to help a toddler understand expected behaviors is with positive reinforcement; there are a lot of free resources online to help a parent manage discipline and encourage positive behavior.
~ Encourage participation in simple chores – Once a toddler has mastered the art of being vertical, they often try to copy mum by sweeping the floor and this type of behavior should be encouraged. This helps to develop motor skills while also instilling a sense of responsibility into the child. Click here for tips on developing a child’s self-confidence.
~ Surround your child with natural materials – Buy wooden blocks and other toys; there are online suppliers of early learning resources, with an emphasis on natural materials. Spend at least 30 minutes a day in your toy corner and demonstrate correct use, allowing the child to dictate the objects they wish to engage with.
~ Make the best use of available tech – Start looking at parenting apps available on Play Store (there are many, some free and some for a small fee). You can set up a system that allows you to see and hear junior when asleep, which brings peace of mind.
~ Learning through play – Young children learn well through play at supportive care centre in Clementi, whether structured or not and this becomes apparent when observing a toddler interact with a range of toys. Once a child figures out how to open something, they will retain this and repetition reinforces new knowledge.
Early learning is a crucial aspect of child development and there are resources on the web to help new parents.
