Types of Welders

Welding is such an important work that has a direct contribution to the construction of civilization. Without welding industrialization and constructions cannot be imagined. As a professional job, it is one of the most demandable jobs in the job market. In every nook and corner of the world, welders are of high demand.

Welding is an exciting and challenging job. Welding education can be quite expensive as well, welder training programs usually cost about $5,000-$15,000. There is a great variety of welding processes for different metals and working procedures. As its working area is huge, it has numerous variations. However, to be an expert in welding, you have to know the basics of its different types and their working process.

There are almost 30 types of welding that exist in processing. Its range is from oxy-fuel to high tech category. Fox example laser beam welding. Among the four types are majorly used. They are TIG, MIG, Stick & Flux and Cored arc welding. Each of them has some merits and demerits and you have to practice them well to achieve mastery.

Types of Welders / Welding

TIG welding

TIG welding is widely used but it is a little bit difficult to learn. Both hands have to work simultaneously. On one hand you will have to feed the rod at the same time you will hold the TIG torch with the other hands. The torch produces arc and heat which makes the joint smooth. TIG welding is used to join conventional metals like steel, nickel alloys, aluminum, cobalt, copper alloys, titanium etc. If you want to know more about TIG welding, this post on WeldersCave would be a great resource for sure.

MIG- The easiest type of welding

MIG welding is a commonly used welding type and it’s easy to learn for beginners. MIG welding is done in two steps. Firstly, the welder uses bare wire and secondly uses flux core. With bare wire, you can join pieces of metal. You can use flux core MIG welding outdoors as it does not need a gas supply or flow meter.

Stick welding

Another name of stick welding is arc welding. It is a very old fashioned welding type. In this type, the welder uses an electrode welding rod. Whenever the rod keeps in contact with the metal it creates spark and heat, the joint is made at that time.

Plasma-Arc welding

This type of welding is very difficult. This type of welding is usually done in aerospace applications. It is used for thick metals of an inch. For example, it is used on the engine blade of an airplane. The technique is similar to TIG welding, though they are not fully similar. In this process, the electrode is adjourned and the ionizing gases are regulated to create heat inside the arc.

Gas welding

Gas welding has now become a rare one. It has been widely replaced by TIG welding. For gas welding, there are some kits to carry including oxygen and acetylene. This type of welding is used to cut heavy metals rather than joining them.

The demand for welders is increasing every day in the world. In the US there is a great demand for welders. Not only in the US, all over the world where it is development work, but expert welders are also badly necessary.

It is one of the best options for the people who want to earn more without not having high degrees or don’t dare to take the challenge.

  • Wow, I thought it was interesting when you explained that both hands have to be working when using the TIG welding method. With all forms of welding, it would probably be important to wear the proper safety equipment and clothing. That way sparks can’t fly back and burn your skin.

  • That’s good to know that TIG welding would be good for most conventional metals. I have a friend who needs some help with some welding for a project he is working on, but he doesn’t know what type of welding he needs. I should recommend that he looks into TIG welding if he hasn’t found a solution already.
