Buying Vs Renovating: Why You Should Custom Build Your Next Home

Have you been considering buying a new home? What about building your new dream home? There are many homes on the market; however, that doesn’t mean there is a dream home for everyone, and while the housing bubble in the US continues to hold steady, the demand for houses is far outstripping supply. This puts more pressure on those looking to buy it and settle for something they don’t necessarily want to get a foot on the ladder or find something more suitable.

While home renovations are still a booming industry, taking things one step further to build your own home can offer you massive benefits over renovating an existing property. So before you make any compromises or commit to a fixer-upper and rope in The Property Brothers to help you out, why not look at the benefits of building your own home?

Buying Vs Renovating

Purpose Built

Before we go any further, let’s start with the main benefit, a custom home is built to your specification. You get to choose the floor plan; you can add in all the aspects you want in a home and make it work for you regardless of the plot size. There is no need to knock walls down and start again; you start from scratch, so you get to design a layout and floor plan that works for you and your lifestyle.

Greater Choice in Materials and Fittings

Everyone has different tastes and specifications for how they want their home to look, but when designing a custom house, you can take this one step further by choosing your own materials for every single part of the house. Whether you want a more eco-friendly home using recycled or low-impact materials or you want to choose more modern styles, it is often entirely up to you and something you can get involved in choosing before the foundations are even laid. Expert home builders will work with you to ensure you get the materials you want right from the foundations to the roof and everything in between.

Increase Energy Efficiency

Many older homes on the market aren’t built for the world we live in today on many levels. But one such way they fall short is how energy efficient they are. You can remove this element by incorporating efficiency into the design process and end up with features that benefit you and conserve energy without hiking up your bills once you move in. From using higher-grade materials with better energy ratings to incorporating the latest technology to ensure improved efficiency, you can include this element to ensure you build an energy-efficient home suitable for now and in the future.

Customization

Lastly, you can customize your home however you want. When you move into a new property, chances are you need to like the decor and features the previous owner had or change them at an added cost to yourself. When designing your new home, you can add in all the customization you need to make the house completely your style and taste by adding in custom aspects that will enhance the décor and improve your quality of life. So all those little amenities you might have wished you had, from a new upgraded HVAC system to a complete smart home, or even vaulted ceilings and full-length windows, whatever it is you want, you can incorporate it from the beginning.

Conclusion

While there are pros and cons to building your dream home over renovating an existing property, there is no denying it can offer you many benefits. So if you are on the fence or you simply cannot find your next dream home, why not look at building, not renovating, for your next big project?

  • Hubby and I have renovated many homes and loved them. We now live in a custom built and a bit disappointed in the craftsmanship but still love the home.

  • We chose to renovate as buying was more expensive here. I also think that buying involves more work with moving.

  • I’ve always wanted to build my home but instead we just went forth with buying a new home last year. I just couldn’t wait for the contractors to finish building it, and I really don’t think I could handle the stress of the process either.

  • If I had a ton of cash… building custom would be a good choice… or maybe 4 years ago it would have been the better choice but with the costs of new homes so high right now (as well as everything else)… I am all for remodeling PLUS by remodeling your home you are choosing a more sustainable option. To build that new home… who knows how many trees had to be cut down for that…. instead just remodel and repurpose the structure and home you already have. I feel the same about furniture… instead of throwing away furniture that may be a little dated… repurpose it. People just love to throw away and buy new…… so wasteful!
