Christmas Movies You Should Watch This Year

It’s that time of the year again. Christmas, and while we are looking for the perfect present, nothing beats having a family gathering to watch the best and most festive Christmas movies. So, everyone is looking for the best movies to watch this holiday.

With so many options available on Netflix, Disney plus, Roku (and if you are stuck at work, LoopTV player), it can be hard to know what’s worth watching and what isn’t. Luckily there are a lot of different Christmas movies that are worth checking out this year.

Christmas Movies You Should Watch

A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince is a romantic comedy about Amber, an American journalist who travels to Aldovia to interview their prince for her job. However, Amber gets more than she bargained for when she meets the handsome prince, and he takes an interest in her.

This one is perfect for those who are looking for a bit of that Holiday Christmas romance story that always pops up around the holiday season, such as Single All The Way, Almost Christmas, and The Princess Switch

The Holiday

The Holiday is a great movie to watch with your partner this Christmas. It’s a romantic comedy about two women who swap homes for the holiday season. Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, and Jack Black star in The Holiday. The holiday is now seen as a great holiday classic, with many people loving the wholesomeness of the characters.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The movie tells the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King in Halloween Town. He is bored with life and seeks something new to excite him. In a quest for inspiration, he travels to Christmastown, where he finds love and learns that it’s not all about presents and parties.

It’s a great film for kids but also has some pretty dark themes that adults will enjoy as well! It’s another great classic for anyone who misses Halloween but wants to transition into the Christmas season.

Love Actually

Love Actually is a 2003 romantic comedy film written and directed by Richard Curtis. It features an ensemble cast of mostly British actors, each of whom plays a fictional character. The ten separate yet parallel stories are all linked by the theme of love, Christmas, and growing closer during the holidays.

The Grinch (How The Grinch Stole Christmas)

The Grinch is a classic Christmas movie, originally from 1957. It’s about a grouchy green creature who hates Christmas and wants to steal it from the people of Whoville, so he plots to ruin their holiday celebrations.

There have been many incarnations of the Grinch, with many people growing up and loving the 2000 movie starring Jim Carrey, and later in 2018, a computer-generated movie called The Grinch featuring Benedict Cumberbatch. Any of these is perfect for the whole family.

Elf

Elf is a Christmas comedy that was released in 2003, starring Will Ferrell and directed by Jon Favreau. This film has it all: comedy, family bonding, and a great Christmas spirit! It’s about a man raised by elves who goes to New York City to find his real father. What makes this movie so great is that there are plenty of laughs throughout the whole thing—you won’t be bored for a second!

This movie is perfect for families because it doesn’t get “too” dark or scary, even with some minor scenes. However, this is another modern Christmas classic everyone loves because of its overall Christmas wholesomeness.

12 Dates of Christmas

This movie is a romantic comedy that stars Keri Russell and Matthew Broderick. It’s about a woman who is forced to go on 12 dates with a man she hates, but eventually falls in love with him. The movie was released in 2005, so it’s got a retro feel to it—and more importantly, it has an incredible soundtrack featuring artists like Train and Gavin DeGraw. While the premise may seem silly at first glance (who wouldn’t want to avoid being stuck in such an awkward situation?), this film will sweep you off your feet and leave you feeling warm inside as well as out!

Christmas With the Kranks

In the vein of Home Alone and The Santa Clause, Christmas With the Kranks is a classic family film starring everyone’s favorite actor, Tim Allen. It follows Luther Krank (Allen) as he decides to skip Christmas with his family and go on a cruise with his wife instead. But when their daughter gets stranded at the airport on the way out of town for their vacation, they are forced to stay home for Christmas after all. This movie has become so popular that it was made into a Broadway musical in 2018!

  • There are always so many great new ones and the ones that we make a tradition. I might be older, but I still love the classic cartoons. 🙂
