Maintenance Jobs to Winter-Proof Your Property

The best time to patch up your home to ensure it’s ready for winter is before the weather gets too cold. Plenty of common winter problems are likely to plague your home, so you should prepare for them in advance.

Being prepared for the cold winter months means that you can prevent damage from happening and save time and money on repairs.

Here are some maintenance jobs to winter-proof your property, that you should tackle before winter hits.

Get the Roof Fixed

It’s surprisingly easy to take your roof for granted, but it’s an essential part of your property’s structure. Your roof protects your home from the outside world, keeping the cold, rain, and wind out while keeping the warmth in.

If your roof gets damaged, then it can let in water. This can lead to water damage that, depending on how bad your roof is, could be disastrous. Your roof is especially vulnerable during winter due to the strong winds and extreme weather conditions it goes through.

You can check your roof yourself with a basic visual inspection, but it’s often best to contact a roofing company to make sure there are no potential issues with your roof. They can patch up minor damage and prevent it from getting any work, as well as identify any more serious issues.

Insulation

While getting your roof checked out, it’s a good idea to get your insulation inspected. Your insulation does deteriorate over time, and it’s an important part of keeping your home warm during the winter.

As utility bills continue to rise, more households are looking for ways to save money. Making sure that your home is well insulated will keep your home warm, without breaking the bank.

Pipe Insulation

Speaking of insulation, one common problem that houses have during winter is burst pipes. When the weather gets cold, the water in your pipes can freeze. When water turns to ice, it expands and can warp or crack the pipe. When, when it defrosts again, the pipe will burst.

Burst pipes can cause major problems. You can end up with water damage, potentially costing a lot of money to repair. Not only that, but you might have to switch the water off in your home while the pipe gets patched up.

One simple fix to prevent this problem is to invest in pipe insulation. This insulation wraps around your pipes, preventing the water from freezing and keeping everything running as it should.

Coping With Blackouts

Depending on where you live, winter might result in blackouts. Blackouts are annoying at the best of times, but they can be dangerous in the winter. The low-tech solution is to stock up on supplies, such as plenty of blankets and bottled water.

If you have a wood-burning stove or a fire, then a good supply of firewood is a must to provide some heat and light. A generator is also a great idea, especially if you are prone to blackouts. Even a small battery or power cell can keep your devices charged.

We have such terrible windows but can’t afford new ones yet. We have put plastic over them in the winter to help with insulation.

  • The last time we had a huge storm, we were one of the lucky ones who didn’t lose power. But we did lose water for several days. From now on, during storms, I’ll make plans for prepping water just in case.
