The Church of Facebook: How the Hyperconnected Are Redefining Community

THE+CHURCH+OF+FACEBOOK
From the Publisher:

A revolution is taking place, one profile at a time. Online social networks are connecting people like never before. And with millions of users, they’re creating a virtual world that erases all boundaries. It’s a movement that’s changing how we form relationships, perceive others, and shape our identity.
Yet at their core, these sites reflect our need for community. Our need for intimacy, connection, and a place to simply belong. Are we seeing the future of the church? Do these networks help or hurt relationships? And what can these sites teach us about God and each other?
The Church of Facebook explores these ideas and much more. Author Jesse Rice offers a revealing look at the wildly popular world of online social groups. From profiles, to The Wall, to status updates, to “poking,” Jesse shares what Facebook reveals about us, and what it may mean for the church.

From the back Cover:

A revolution is underway. A Wi-Fi, worldwide movement that is changing how we interact with others. It’s a seismic shift that is redefining the idea of community. Every day millions of people connect through online social networks, sites that allow us to follow our friends, and shape how they view us.

But while personal profiles are revealing, they hint at even larger truths. They uncover our desire for identity, our craving to be known, and our need to belong.

Jesse Rice believes that Facebook offers a profound look at our deepest needs. Join Jesse as he explores social networking and its impact on culture and the church. Filled with fresh perspectives and provocative questions, The Church of Facebook encourages us to pursue authentic relationships with God and those around us.

My Review:
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this book.
Novel, textbook, guide?
I think it’s all three rolled up in one.
As as avid Facebooker
(and of course, blogger),
I was intrigued by the title.
Facebook
(and other social networks)
have become a part of almost everyone’s daily lives.
I certainly agree that most of us
do seem to have “a craving to be known”,
and that we need an outlet for our creative sides.
We need to connect…
but don’t always want to (or have the time),
to meet others face to face.
What does Facebook offer?
Well besides the games
( I play Farmville, Farm Town,
Fairyland, Jungle Jewels, Country Life, Farkle,
Island Paradise, Yoville, and Cafe World – just
to name a few. [Oh my gosh…
seeing that in print makes me feel kind of lame.])
There is the almost instant ability to connect with friends
and family.
1. I can grab photo’s of my kids and grand kids, from
my childrens profiles.
2.  Find out about contests that I might want to enter
(and post links to the ones that I’m offering).
3. Hear that a friend has another migraine.
4.  Empathize with a fellow pug lover, over
their dogs recent trachea collapse.
5.  Become a fan of Stacy’s, and thus receive free coupons in the mail.
6.  Join in on discussions of what is in store for the
left wing liberals in 3 years hence.
7.  etc. etc. etc.
Rice explores the world of social networking,
and gives those who don’t know what it’s all about,
a taste of what they have yet to experience.
Excellent Book – gave me some good positive feedback
(and an excuse to keep spending time on FB?).

Thanks for this review. My daughter (who also helps me with the blog & facebook, because I am so technology challenged) would like to read this book. I am forwarding her your post. If I was really cool, I'd find a way to SHARE this post with her on her Facebook profile. Good grief I feel old.

    Great review-
    CYM
