The DIY Basics For New Homeowners

DIY skills are something we all believe we have in ourselves. We all know the end of a hammer from its grip, and we’re all sure we could be good in a crisis. However, if you’re new to the homeowning world, and you’ve never had to take property problems head on, it’s time to read up on what makes a person good at DIY!

Sure, there are a lot of dangerous house jobs that are better left to the professionals, but you won’t know that until you get to grips with the basics! That’s what we’re here to help with; any and all new homeowners should know how to keep their house in good order, and sometimes that means putting up a shelf or two yourself. Without further ado, here are the top basics to keep in mind before you put together your own tool box.

The DIY Basics For New Homeowners

Invest Heavily in PPE

PPE, or personal protective equipment, is the best thing to have on hand whenever you want to try a new DIY job. You’re going to need to keep yourself and your family safe, at all costs and turns, no matter what you’re trying to accomplish this time round! Even if it’s just a bit of paint on the walls, considering if you need a fumigation safe mask to hand is something you should include on the planning list.

But what other PPE should you keep in your home? Goggles to protect your eyes with, some ear protectors, thick gloves that splinters and nails can’t work their way through, and a good pair of sturdy boots in case you drop anything on your toes.

Always Know What’s in Your Walls

Your walls hide a lot of things from your eyes, and you’d be shocked to open them up and see the real extent of the mess in there! However, when you’re attempting to patch up a hole or you even want to knock a wall through to create an open plan living room and kitchen, you need to know if anything important is in there.

At a time like this, it might be best to call out a Drywall Repair service to get the job done for you; you don’t want to paste up some wires and/or a load bearing wall wrong! And people can find mixed results when using ‘stud finders’ against their walls, so having a professional on hand to help out is usually best.

There’s a Right and Wrong Way to Paint

Finally, it’s best to know now that there’s a right and wrong way to paint. To finish off quite simply, yes, what you thought was a simple job is actually much more complex under the surface; at the least, you need to know that going with the grain of the wall makes the finish look the best!

DIY can be easy to get started with but hard to master. Make sure you know what you’re using and how to use it.

  • I will keep these in mind. Normally we do not DIY to make sure it’s done right. I’d rather hire someone!

  • People who just start knocking out walls give me anxiety, lol. I would be scared to tumble the whole house. That’s a professional call for me, for sure.
