Top Causes of a Leak in Your Home
Discovering a leak in your home is the last thing that you want to do. Whether there’s a damp patch building or you can hear a dripping somewhere, you know that you have to identify the source and get it repaired as soon as you can. Even if it only starts as a minor problem, it could quickly grow and become much worse. There are many different causes of leaks in your home, some of them internal and some of them external. Once you’ve identified where the leak is coming from, you can make sure that you take the correct steps to fix it.
Here are some of the most common causes of a leak in your home and what you need to do about them.
External Leaks
A leak isn’t always coming from inside the house. Sometimes you have water leaking into your home because you have an external problem, such as an issue with your roof or the sealing around a window or door. This might mean that you can see water dripping or pooling, or maybe you’ll see condensation or damp. When you use a roofing contractor to inspect your roof for you, you can catch any problems that might be causing your leak. If you have problems with your windows or a door, you might be able to find and even fix the issue yourself.
Dripping Faucets
Dripping faucets are a common and very annoying problem in the home. When a faucet starts to drip, you can often hear it even from other parts of the house. Fortunately, a lot of dripping faucets are easy to fix on your own. If you turn off your water supply, you can then examine the faucet by removing it and taking a closer look. Sometimes the problem might be as simple as a buildup of debris that you can clean. Other times, you might need to replace the washer. If you don’t feel like trying this yourself, a plumber can always help you.
Leaking Pipes
When you see a pipe leaking, it can seem like a big issue. However, if it’s a plastic or PVC pipe, you might be able to fix the issue on your own. You can start by finding out exactly where the water is coming from. Dry the area as much as you can and watch for where the water seems to be leaking from – it might not be where you see it dripping. After turning off the water, you can replace the section of pipe if you’re able to (or get someone else to do it) but there are also products like epoxy that you can use for temporary fixes.
Loose Connectors
One of the easiest fixes for a leak might be a loose water connector. This can easily happen from things moving, for example, your washing machine might shift and cause a leak at the connector. Tightening it back up again will usually solve the problem.
Leaks in your home shouldn’t be left alone. Fixing them as soon as you can is important if you want to prevent further problems.
Leaking have destroyed a lot of properties. And the most annoying thing probably is when the leaks happen in places that isn’t easily detected. After which, it may be too late.
