What Are You Supposed To Do In A Home Emergency?
There are a lot of home emergencies you may have to deal with over the years. You can never be quite sure when they’ll strike, as the name suggests, but when they do you’ve got to be ready! You need to know how to handle a potential electrical fire, or how to minimize the damage from a plumbing accident, and this post is here to help out with that.
A home emergency doesn’t have to be completely devastating and we’re determined to prove that with the points below.
Even a dream home can let you down!
Locate All System Valves
The best thing to know ahead of time is where the valves in your home are. Where is the water valve, in case of flood? Turn it off to ensure the pressure in the pipes doesn’t build up anymore. Similarly, make sure you know where the gas valve is, to prevent any escaping into the air when you’ve got a burst pipe. And if your home runs off of a furnace, you should always be using the valve to control the fire level!
Have the Right Tools on Hand
As you know, a home emergency can happen at any time. And that’s why it’s so important to have a tool kit on hand that’s ready to deal with a problem. But what should be in this kit? Well you’re going to need a regular tool kit, of course, but make sure there’s also some duct tape, flashlight batteries, and replacement parts in there too.
If possible, you should also think about getting a generator wired up to your house. If the power goes out, you’ll still have a source of electricity to rely on for the next few hours or couple days. This’ll keep the lights and heat on when you need it most, especially during winter periods when you’ve got older relatives over.
Talk to a Professional
Of course, this is much more of a preventative maneuver, but then most of the best emergency strategies are! Strike against an emergency before it gets to you and call up a hardy professional to get some measures in place that can help you take action before the damage becomes too much.
For example, a Plumbing Leak Detection system would come in super handy if you live in a place that’s prone to flooding, or you’ve had trouble with your home’s pipes before. Aside from this, ensuring you get your home’s maintenance regularly seen to will also always work. Check on the roof at least once a year, make sure there are no holes in the attic, always call in a crack in the wall/foundation, and never let a blocked drain or gutter sit untouched for too long.
A home emergency can make us panic and flap about; make sure you know what you’re doing ahead of time to keep the disaster to a minimum. Your home can recover in quick time if you get there first!
Do what most people would do and ring a builder or a plumber!
It’s so important to have all of the right tools on hand.
I don’t want to know any of this, except we are looking to buy a town house, and I have no choice, I cannot ignore that I will have more things to do and worry about. There is so much less responsibility living in an apartment, that is about to change, and I am bookmarking your article for when I move and need to rely on your info! Thanks!
I need to look into a leak detection device. We recently had a pipe leak in our house.
I did n’t even know there was such a thing! I love learning something new!
Having the right tools on hand is really important! Thanks for sharing this with us! This is so informative
Owning a home can come with tons of surprises. I just bought my house in May 2021. I do know where the shit off valve is to my house, I have a fire extinguisher (need to check it), and home owners insurance to protect my investment.
Love this! When we were going through the adoption process we had to have all the safety equipment and an evacuation plan for every room etc… I would have never done it if I wasn’t made to and it is so important to do so!
Thankfully my husband is pretty clued up with most things and if he’s stuck his brother who lives up the road can help. It is good to be prepared.
We have experienced one and it was terrible but with a little help and good advice we got through. Great tips!
I prefer always to be ready to any kind of emergency. These are helpful advice that I should remember!
