BREAKING THE BANK – Tour / Yona McDonough Guest Post and Giveaway

The Giveaway is now CLOSED.

Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Yona McDonough,

author of
Breaking the Bank
 For her guest post I asked the following question:

” How do you get into the writer mode, when writing childrens books,
versus adult novels?”

Here’s Yona…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been asked that question many times, and even after three adult novels, two essay collections and the eighteen books I’ve written for children, I still don’t have a clear answer. But maybe I can describe it this way: my novels for adults always begin with a voice, as if someone is tapping my on the shoulder and whispering softly but urgently in my ear. “Listen,” says the voice. “I have something to tell you and it is very important, so please be sure to get it all down.”  As a writer, I wait and pray for that voice, and am so elated when it arrives. Hearing that voice makes me feel less like a creator, and more like a vessel, empty and ready for that other, unknown person who comes to inhabit me for a time.   BREAKING THE BANK  began with Mia Saul’s voice—I heard her frustration, anxiety, and her bitterness. I also heard her irrepressible hope that she could somehow, through a combination of wit, luck and love, turn her life around.
Whereas when I write children’s books, I don’t so much as hear an outside voice, but respond to the voice of the 9 or 10-year old girl who is still very much alive and present inside me.  I write for that girl, trying to entertain, delight, and ultimately move her.  Although I have written many biographies and love the form, my heart’s dearest love has always been fiction, whether for children or adults, and my favorites among my books for children (Should a writer have favorites? I don’t know, but I confess that I do) are the novels I have written for young readers. When I received the first bound, finished copy of my newest children’s book, THE DOLL SHOP DOWNSTAIRS, I waited until everyone in my house was asleep and then curled up on the couch to read the whole thing from cover to cover. I read not as a writer or editor, but simply as a reader.  My first thought upon finishing the book was, “Now here is a book I would have adored as a child!”  So I feel very fortunate to be able to both commune with the girl who I once was, and yet remain open to the voices who inhabit the novels I write for the woman I now am.
Thanks to Sarah and Pocket Books,
