Cashmere Care Guide: 6 Points to Keep in Mind

It’s no surprise that cashmere has been worn for centuries and passed down from generations. The material is not just the warmest but also the most durable out there that will last you for several years.

However, despite this, you will need to care for it properly. With a bit of TLC, cashmere can actually last you a lifetime!

Let’s take a look at some of the main factors you must keep in mind to maintain and give your cashmere clothes the utmost care and love.

Cashmere Care Guide: Simple Steps to Remember

Cashmere Care Guide

Cashmere care is not complicated. It’s actually easier than you imagined. Follow these six simple steps to caring for your cashmere so that it gives you years of pleasure, warmth, and opulence.

  • Comb the Fibers Carefully

After wearing your cashmere clothes a few times, you might notice small balls or pills forming on the surface. These are loose fiber ends that get tangled together as they rub against each other when you wear them.

These can easily be untangled by gently combing through the fibers. You can also use lint tape or your razor to untangle and remove these fuzzballs.

  • Hand Wash Your Cashmere in Cold Water with Mild Detergent

When you care for your cashmere clothes, the best thing you can do is gently hand-wash them. Avoid washing them in the machine because that can significantly damage them and reduce their quality.

When handwashing, ensure that the water is cold or lukewarm. Hot water or something like this can shrink cashmere within seconds. Moreover, regular detergent might be too harsh for cashmere. Instead, opt for a mild detergent or some baby shampoo to wash your cashmere clothes.

  • Avoid Adding Fabric Softener

Can cashmere get any softer? Perhaps. But only if you let it dry naturally. Avoid adding any fabric softeners that can actually reduce cashmere’s softness, so avoid adding any of it. If you really want to use a softener, it is best to use a DIY one with vinegar and baking soda.

  • Reshape and Let it Dry

Cashmere is in its most delicate form when it is wet, which is when it requires the most amount of care. It is important to let cashmere dry on its own and not try wringing it at all. This can harm the fibers in the material. To remove excess water, simply reshape the cashmere and place it on a towel. The towel will eventually absorb all of the water.

Unfortunately, cashmere can take up to days to completely dry. Hence, you will need to be extremely careful and patient at this step.

  • Gently Spot Clean

If you have a stain or spot on your cashmere clothes, you can simply dab it and rub it to clean it off. Make sure to spritz or use a damp cloth with cold water since hot water will shrink the fibers.

You can also use a dab of mild detergent or a special cashmere shampoo to clean the stain. If this does not work, have it professionally cleaned.

  • Store it Inside Out

Ideally, cashmere clothes should be stored in a dry, well-aired, and dust-free area that is away from direct sunlight. Additionally, you should always keep them inside out. If you are storing it away for a long time, such as during the summers, ensure that it is properly clean and de-pilled. Ideally, you should also store it in a storage bag.

Final Words

Your cashmere will improve and soften if you continue with these care tips. A material as luxurious as cashmere definitely needs you to provide a bit of TLC!

  • Cashmere is such a soft fabric but sounds a bit too much effort to care for. I’m a “throw it in the wash” type of gal, so I avoid anything labeled “handwash only.”
