Georgie’s Bakery and Cafe in Rochester NY

When I travel I love to eat in small local establishments.  I was introduced to Gerogie’s Bakery and Cafe, by my daughter, Stephanie.  We went on a dreary cold Saturday afternoon. The wind was blowing, it was snowing and about 20 out. Oh how I wish that we had gone earlier because they had sold out of almost all of their bakery items.  (*Note to self – next time go EARLY.) Obviously Georgie’s is so popular with the locals, that it doesn’t matter what the weather is like – he is open – they will come!

Georgie’s is a cozy little place – I think that there are 4 tables.  A lot of their business is catering a take out.

We ordered the daily lunch special –  Red Rice Gandules  (I could kick myself for not taking photos as soon as our food arrived), a Cubano, Fries and sodas.  We also got some pastries to go.  I was so disappointed that the guava had sold out before we got there.  I settled for cheese, apple and pineapple. Let me tell you, the meal was HUGE. It consisted of rice, pigeon peas, pork and chicken with a side of fresh Cuban bread with butter.  The food was really flavorful but not overly spicy – just the way I like it. Did I mention that there was a LOT of food?  Stephanie and I split a Cubano – which was also BIG, and nibbled on the meal, and Gracie (my grand daughter) shared her fries with us.

While we were eating both Georgie and his lovely wife, Liz, came out to visit with us.  We had the nicest conversation.  Grace wrapped them around her little finger and before you know it – she was munching on a chocolate chip cookie.

We had so much food leftover that we ate the rest that night for dinner.

If you are looking for FANCY – skip Georgie’s all together.  If you want GOOD FOOD (and lots of it), at a reasonable price – RUN, don’t walk to Georgie’s Bakery and Cafe, and if you want guava, get there EARLY, or call ahead and have them put some aside for you.  They are open Monday – Saturday from 8:00 to 3:00.

All of our menu items may be enjoyed in our Cafe or To Go!

For Breakfast, we have Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwiches on a fresh roll. They may be ordered with or without meat-Ham, Bacon or Sausage.

For Lunch, we have Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Sandwiches, Empanadas and Subs. There is also a different Soup each day and Chili (seasonal). We have a great Fish Fry every Friday served with our fresh homemade Cole Slaw or Mac Salad. If you desire Rochester’s Best Cuban Sandwich, call ahead to make sure we have not sold out of our Cubanos! We feature Puerto Rican home cooking every Saturday from 10AM until it is gone.

For dessert, we have Brownies, Custard-filled Pastry Horns, and Cinnamon Buns. We make all sorts of different cookies everyday. Our Spanish Pastries include Pastelillos (feather light turnovers layered with your choice of slightly bitter Guava Paste OR Raspberry), Quesitos (honey-glazed pastries baked with cream cheese or fruit or Both), Bread Pudding Puddin (raisins, cinnamon, eggs, bread to order), Danish and Flan (to order).

Our full menu can be seen and printed out here in pdf format Classic Style.
