I HATE PEOPLE / Review

I Hate People
by Jonathan Littman  & Marac Hershon
I+HATE+PEOPLE
From the Publisher:

Face it, whether your company has 10 employees or 10,000, you must grapple with people you can’t stand in the office. Luckily Jonathan Littman and Marc Hershon have written I HATE PEOPLE!, a smart, counter-intuitive, and irreverent turn on the classic workplace self-help book that will show you how to identify the Ten Least Wanted–the people you hate–while revealing the strategies to neutralize them. Learn to fly right by the “Stop Sign” (nay-sayer) and rise above the pronouncements of the “Know-it-None”.

About the Authors:

A contributing editor to Playboy, Jonathan Littman is the coauthor of the Art of Innovation and The Ten Faces of Innovation. He has also written eight books, including two nonfiction volumes about famous computer hackers, The Watchman and The Fugitive Game.

Marc Hershon is a branding expert who has dreamt up names for countless hit products, including BlackBerry, Swiffer, Pentium, and Dasani. He is also a comedy veteran who has worked closely with Jerry Seinfeld, Dana Carvey, Paul Reiser, and Robin Williams.

My Review:
Well – according to the test at the beginning
of the book I’m a “Devout People Hater”.
Oh Dear!
The actual full title of this book is:
I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and
Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want
Out of Your Job.

My husband borrowed it, the instant it came through my front door.
When I asked him to tell me what he thought about the book he said,
“These guys know what they’re talking about!”
High praise from my husband, indeed.
He’s been in the workforce for over 30 years.
He works with: co-workers at his office,
clients, subcontractors, vendors (and the list goes on and on),
so I guess that he’s pretty qualified to give an opinion.
I, on the other hand, have been a stay at home mom
for most of my adult years. BUT – I’ve had to deal
with plenty of people at the few jobs that I’ve held…
along with the endless committees at the schools that my children attended.
(We have 10 – so I’ve done my fair share of volunteer work!)
There is so much packed into I Hate People,
that I don’t even know where to begin.
There is a lot of humor going on here – which makes for a fun read.
Basically, the premise of the book is that:
A. You will deal with people that you don’t like.
B. Your best bet, is to learn to be a “soloist”.
C. You can be a “soloist” and still work with others.

Broken into 4 sections:

Section 1: The Ten Least Wanted
Section 2: Flying Solo
Section 3: Office Life
Section 4: Spaces and Places
I Hate People is filled with practical tips to:
Recognize the types of people that you work with – like how to spot a liar.
Learn how to become a “soloist” – there’s a quiz – I love quizes:-)
Deal with constant interruptions – Email, Cell Phones,
and Old Farts, to name a few.
Doodle – yeah, I said Doodle.
If you want to read a book in the finance/business genre,
that won’t bore you to death…then this is a book for you.

Yea, the title caught my attention, too. There's someone in my life I'd like to "neutralize."
