Methods to Help You Protect Your Home and Loved Ones

When a home gets broken into, one of the feelings you will be flooded by is a sense of violation. Someone has rifled through all your personal effects and thrown them to the ground. This sense is not something that easily leaves you. In fact, it can stay with you for a long time. After the initial shock, fear, anger, sadness, etc., this sense of violation will remain with you. You’ll always be wondering what they took that you cannot remember or if they touched this and that. It is a terrible feeling. It may force you to move out of a house you loved, even if you boost security after the fact. What you need to be is proactive rather than reactive. You are far better putting the right security measures in place now and preventing a break-in rather than hoping it won’t happen.

Methods to Help You Protect Your Home and Loved Ones

Locked Windows

A lot of thieves are opportunistic; this means if they see a crack, then they may well jump. So, you need to ensure that there are little to no opportunities. Don’t leave windows open when you leave the house, for starters. Some older windows or double-hung windows are child’s play to a burglar as they have pretty useless locks. So it is in your best interests to attach a decent lock to these windows. Pink locks or key locks are great solutions. Don’t forget your patio doors either, some of these have pretty flimsy locks too.

Secure Doors

When was the last time your front door was changed? What kind of lock does it have on it? Some locks are extremely easy to break into, and even if your lock is pretty secure, if the frame is weak, then all it takes is one hard push to open it. About a third of all burglaries are committed by criminals simply walking in through the front door. So, to eliminate that threat, upgrade your front door, add extra locks and ensure that the frames are strong and robust. You could even have a barred gate behind the door if you have the space and don’t mind its appearance. Bars work great on windows as well.

Security Lights

Installing security lights at key locations is a great way to prevent a break-in. Motion detecting light placed at the front entrance, back entrance and to guard any outhouses is a good idea. Not only will this alert you of a would-be intruder, but it will also alert anyone in the near vicinity. If you don’t have access to power down the garden near an outhouse, why not use solar paneled lighting.

Install a Security System

A security system has the power not only to deter a burglar, but it can also help out someone away, even if they do not actually enter the home. Your footage may help someone else who was broken into if you capture them trying to break in, but your security measure prevents them, but they beak in somewhere else later on, for example. A security system may also help you reduce your home insurance premiums. You can either install some cameras yourself as part of a DIY system or use a professional company with alerts and callouts included. This clearly depends on your budget and the likelihood of a break-in happening. You can research how many break-ins have happened in your area and with that knowledge upgrade as required. A security system can also give you the power to monitor your home when you are not there. If you have left your partner and children at home, this can offer you peace of mind.

Lock your WiFi Network

If you haven’t already done this, then this is a must-do. Your WiFi network may allow criminals into your financial information. If your network is connected to a lot of devices on your home security system, potentially criminals can hack in. So, ensure that everything is secured and your passwords are strong.

Insurance

Finally, you need to ensure that you have purchased the right insurance for your property. It needs to cover all the contents as well as the home itself from all potential mishaps, including fire and break-in. If anything does happen, at least you are not going to be out of pocket, and although this cannot protect you from that sense of violation, it can make the process easier t6o manage.
