Things You Might Need
While it’s impossible to know what you will need until you figure out just what you are renovating, it’s safe to say there are some general ideas you should plan on having available for your projects.
It’s always a good idea to have some saws on hand. Band saws can be pretty useful for home renovation because they can handle large cuts and are powerful. They are not the solve-all and you might decide that a different type of saw will suit your project better.
Here are some other tools and supplies you may want to have nearby.
- Circular saw
- Tape measure
- Screws and nails
This is not a comprehensive list. Make sure you plan what will be needed for whatever renovation idea you decide to tackle.
1. Spruce up the Front Door
A simple remodel of your front door area can make a huge difference in your home. There is a certain power held by the front door and it can often set the tone for the rest of your home. In fact, this could make or break someone’s first impression of your home – including yours!
This is a transition piece. It’s a welcoming entry and it is essential that your front door give off the vibes that you really want it to.
There are several things you can do here and most of them will be totally simple with little extra work needed. Start by replacing your front door if needed. If it is safe and sturdy, you can utilize the door you have. Pick some welcoming paint and give your front door an upgrade with a coat of paint.
Next, paint the trim and surrounding areas of the door. You may need to add trim or replace trim to really make the space sharp. Try things like adding house numbers, upgrading a porch light fixture, and adding décor surrounding your door in some way.
Once you change your front door, you should also consider changing the color of your garage door, so that both of them would match – doing something as simple as adding a new coat of paint can make a huge difference in the curb appeal of your property. Also, the beginning of the year is the perfect time to do what you have been procrastinating since last year – repairs. You will be surprised at how much of a change can make a simple garage door opener repair.”
2. Let There Be Light!
Renovating areas to improve or enhance the lighting can be another big difference maker for your home. Consider the natural light elements in your home and use those to your advantage as much as possible. It’s amazing how serene natural light can be and how it opens up a space.
Make sure that areas are well-lit but that the lighting is soft and warm rather than harsh and cold. Update your light fixtures if needed to have a positive effect on your home. There are some really cool light fixtures out there so go shopping and find small ways like this to improve your space.
3. Build Shelving
There is SO much you can do to or for home renovation simply by building some useful shelves throughout the home. This option really can be about endless because you can build any type of shelves you want or need.
Are you needing additional storage space? Some strategically placed shelving can make a significant difference. You can make as many or as few shelves as you want and you can ultimately use shelves in any room or space as you like.
Here are a few of our favorite shelving ideas for you.
- Shoe rack in the entryway
- Bookcase in the study
- Storage shelves inside a closet
- Storage shelves on the wall
- Coat rack with shelves
- Decorative shelves throughout the house
You can most likely make the shelves on your own and it will take little time and money to get them finished and in place!
4. Bathroom Updates
Most of us cringe when we start thinking about updating our bathrooms. This home renovation can become expensive very quickly so your renovation may depend on your budget. However, there are some very simple updates you can make without spending an arm and a leg.
If you do small pieces at one time, it’s not so bad. You can, of course, go ahead and renovate the entire bathroom if you please. If you don’t want to swing a total renovation, try some simple upgrades.
Change the décor. Buy a new shower curtain and towels and you will feel like the room is half new! Change or update the mirror and wall hangings in the room. Update the lighting for mood lighting and comfort.
You can also try painting the room. Use a light and cheery color to enhance the light without harsh lighting. You can upgrade your sink and vanity space as well if you are up to it.
For big-time bathroom renovations, consider replacing your old toilet with a new self-contained sanicompact toilet to save on labor and costs. Most old toilets use a lot of water, which could be the culprit behind high water bills. If your old toilet is still working well, you can have it modified to use less water instead to save on buying a new one.
Water efficiency, cost effectiveness, and maximizing space while minimizing labor are important considerations to ensure big-time renovations don’t cost more than what you can afford.
