5 Things You Need to Do After Moving In

While there are plenty of common household issues you need to know about, these often crop up in time. When you’ve just moved into your new home, you want your first few days and weeks to be calm and enjoyable as you gradually build your new home. Still, there are a few essential things you need to do before it really feels like a home, especially in terms of safety.

Change the Locks

Many new homeowners don’t think to change the locks, and it typically isn’t a problem. However, if you want peace of mind that your home won’t get broken into by anyone who knew (and maybe had issues with) the old owners, contacting a locksmith can make your home more secure. You will have a brand new key to give to your family and any relatives for emergencies without worrying about someone you don’t know gaining access.

Find Your Water Valve

Hopefully, you never experience a leaky washing machine or flooded bathtub, but you never know what could happen. Water damage can wreak havoc on any home, and if you live in a condo, it can affect your neighbors, too. Locating your water valve means you can switch the water off at the source to stop it from flowing out of your appliances, giving you time to act without needing a bucket.

Check the Yard

If you have pets or young kids, it’s worth checking the yard to make sure there are no poisonous plants that could affect them if they ingest them accidentally. Even if you’re not familiar with all plants, you can follow a guide to identify potentially dangerous or fatal plants and flowers. If you’re still unsure, taking examples to a garden center should help you determine if anything in your garden is dangerous. You should also be careful which flowers you plan on planting, as these could also be dangerous.

Unpack Your Essentials

There’s a reason everyone suggests having a first-night bag for when you move into a property. You don’t want to search through endless boxes and bags to find essentials like your toothpaste, so having a bag where everything is easily accessible will save you plenty of time. The same goes for any devices or chargers or your TV and laptop if you want to enjoy a pizza with the family, even if you have to sit on the floor while you wait for your sofa to arrive tomorrow.

Clean and Tidy

Most homes are thoroughly cleaned before you move in. but this is not always the case. You don’t want to spend your first night cleaning but you also don’t want to live in someone else’s mess. A quick vacuum and wiping down the counters can make the home feel more welcoming and comfortable and you can tackle any bigger issues later.

New Home

Your new home should be safe and comfortable, so these tips will help you make that happen as soon as possible. From feeling secure in your house to having somewhere to relax in the evenings, you can immediately make your new house feel like a home and look forward to making millions of memories.
