Keep your Cat Separate

If you have various other cats within your household then you need to try and keep them separated from your new cat. Ideally, you should do this for as long as it takes for your new cat to settle in. The main thing to know is that cats are all about territory and routine. If you have other cats in your home then you need to avoid any visual contact until the new cat is at ease. This will take around two weeks. Another benefit of doing this is that you can then make sure that your new cat doesn’t have any respiratory issues or even parasites that could infect your other cats. If you intend on going away during this period then[you should look into boarding in a facility like cat boarding adelaide, or  hiring some cat sitters would be the best thing to do, so you can ensure that each of your pets gets the attention that they deserve.

Set up the Space

If you want to do your bit to help your new cat to settle in then you ideally need to ensure that the space is fully set up before you bring your new cat home. Things like setting up the litter box and having the water bowls filled up will help a lot here. It is so important that you allow some parts of your house to belong to your cat too. It may be that you put their bed in your bedroom, and the water bowl in there too. Over time, you can then allow your cat to access other parts of the home. By keeping them confined to one or two rooms, you can stop them from being overwhelmed and trying to mark their territory all the time.

Provide Enrichment

You should be providing your cat with a lot of cat toys, so you can find out which ones they tend to like. If you can take the time to invest early on and if you can play with them then this will make them feel much more comfortable. Make sure that you choose toys that vary quite a lot in terms of style and material, as it may be that your cat doesn’t like furry toys, but love feathered ones. Some cats prefer vertical scratchers and others prefer more horizontal ones. By opting for one of each, you can then make sure that you are giving your cat the enrichment they need.

So as you can see, there are many things that you can do to try and make sure that your cat settles in and if you follow this guide then you should find that you can give them the best home as well as making sure that they are comfortable and happy at all times.
