Hobbies you might want to try during isolation

As the nation attempts to come to terms with the Coronavirus pandemic and its wide-ranging consequences, many of us are left with lots of down time on our hands. With social interaction to be kept to an absolute minimum and the government advising just one form of outdoor exercise per day, UK residents are finding other ways to spend their periods of self-isolation.

TikTok videos have become all the rage, while people are finding countless methods of entertaining themselves in these uncertain and troubling weeks. While remaining active is a great way to improve our mental wellbeing, it’s important that we keep the mind sharp, too.

With the average person now having more time to spare, perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to learn a new hobby or hobbies? Here are a few you might like to try…

Learn a foreign language  

You’re never too old to learn and picking up a second language can open up a wide range of possibilities. It’s likely that the majority studied at least one of Spanish, French or German at school, so perhaps you’d like to return to one of those? And, with the option to learn Spanish grammar online, there is no reason left why you should not give it a try. You might be surprised at just how much you remember and Spanish in particular – estimated to be spoken by 577 million people globally – would enable you to communicate in numerous countries around the world.

Photography

Perhaps now is the time to harness your artistic side and take up a hobby that allows you to express yourself. Photography is a great way to do that; it enables you to get out and explore the area around you, taking pictures of scenes that catch your eye. You may have to assess your financial situation before investing in a high-quality camera but it’ll all be worth it when you produce spectacular photos and who knows, you may even be able to make a little money by selling them on.

If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, a period of quiet reflection can work wonders for your mental well-being. The benefits of meditation are wide and varied, and trying your hand at yoga can also greatly improve your physical health. It can boost recovery after exercise and enhance your flexibility and agility, while the more strenuous routines can prove a good workout. There are all sorts of tutorials and classes available for free online, so why not get yourself a mat, roll it out and start to find that sense of inner peace.
