Tabula Rasa: 3 Things To Do Before Moving Into Your New Home

So, the process is nearing completion. You’ve sold your existing house, found your new dream property, and you’re on the brink of getting the keys and making the move for good. It’s likely been a stressful time, but you can finally — finally — see the light beginning to appear at the end of the tunnel.

As you near moving day, your thoughts are likely to be consumed with the practicalities. You’re going to be packing and organizing boxes, labeling everything in your eyeline, and making more than a few runs to a trash site to throw away items you haven’t seen in years. In the busy blitz of trying to leave your old home, you likely largely forget about the new home.

There is a downside to this, and it tends to occur when you close the front door behind you, ready to settle into the new house after a long day of carrying boxes. The house, the house you now own and live in, is ready and waiting for you– but you feel out of place, discombobulated, and struggle to adjust. It’s a nightmare you don’t need, which is why — even in the midst of a packing frenzy at your old house — you should organize the following prior to moving into your new abode.

1) Make a list of essential information

Before you move, obtain the information and note down the following regarding your new home. As John Myers, owner of an Albuquerque real estate company, says “always make a list and check it twice!”

  • Where the electricity circuit breaker is
  • How to turn the mains water off
  • How the thermostat controls work
  • Where the electrical outlets are in each room
  • What the alarm code is (if applicable)

When you’re tired and stressed from the long moving process, the last thing you need is to find yourself facing a situation where you need to take urgent action and not knowing how to take it. Keep the above list close at hand on moving day, and you can be sure you’ll always be able to get any scenario under control.

2) Hire a professional cleaning service

There’s nothing quite like moving into a new home and realizing the previous occupant has left evidence of their existence behind. Mess, garbage, or just out and out dirt– it’s not something you’re going to want to have to deal with right after a move. Save yourself the hassle and hire in a professional house cleaning service so you begin your residence with a blank slate.

3) Essentials in the kitchen

Purchase a tide-over set of groceries and move them into the kitchen the day before you move. It doesn’t need to be anything elaborate; basic frozen meals, coffee, and a few snacks, but it will save you a lot of time and hassle on moving day. When you’re surrounded by boxes and need a jolt of energy, the coffee and food will be right there ready and waiting for you– far easier than having to sort through boxes trying to find the requisite contents of your old kitchen.

If you manage to do the above prior to moving into your new home, the transition process should be as smooth and simple as possible, and you can fast-forward through the stress and get down to enjoying your new house.
