The 3 Essentials To Get Your Yard Ready For Winter

It seems like just yesterday when you de-winterize your yard to get it ready for summer. Now that the days are getting shorter you have to start thinking about what to do to get it ready for winter once again. The idea is to make sure that your yard is in the best possible shape to bear the cold and come back ready to go in the spring.

By taking the time to do this at the end of every summer or beginning of autumn you are setting yourself up for less work with better results come the spring. A little hard work now will save you more later on.

In this article, we will go over the 3 essentials get your yard ready for the winter.

1 – Fix the fence

Winter snows and cold winds can do a lot of damage to the infrastructure of your yard. If your fence is getting old and needs some work then this is the time to make sure it is strong enough to survive the winter.

Wooden fences tend to rot underground and this will weaken their support. If a strong wind blows then this could take down your fence. It will be much harder to fix a fence in the winter when the weather is nasty and the earth is frozen.

If your fence is looking pretty bad and will require a lot of patches and restructuring then it is better to replace it entirely. Look into some resin or metal fences. The best metal privacy fence is going to last a long time compared to a wooden one so it is worth it to make sure the replacement is going to be better than the previous fence.

2 – Put away potted plants

A soil-filled pot is going to freeze much earlier than the rest of the ground. This makes it likely that any potted plants are not going to survive the winter. To make sure they are alive and well in the spring you will need to put them away.

Pick a spot in the house that is warm and gets decent sunlight and put them there. Keep an eye on the moisture of the soil so they don’t dry out since your house is going to be much drier than the outside.

3 – Keep maintaining the lawn

Before the winter sets in is the best time to make sure any patches in your yard are taken care of. Sprinkle some grass seeds and fertilizer on those spots to get some grass growing there before the cold weather arrives.

It’s also a good idea to start watering the lawn on a regular schedule before the ground freezes. This is going to keep your grass strong with deep roots that are more likely to survive the cold. If you do need to mow it then make sure to leave the length a little bit longer than you normally would.
