Choose Italian Pinot Grigio As Your Go-To White

Those who enjoy their white wine crisp, dry, and zippy need look no further than an Italian Pinot Grigio. The Italians have mastered the cultivation of this wine variety offering some of the best in old-world quality you can find, with the finest bottles hailing from the foothills of the Italian Alps. Warm days in the mountains allow the aromas and flavours to mature while the cool nights help each grape retain ideal acidity. This wine is also slightly sweeter than a Sauvignon Blanc with more floral and fruity notes, making it perfect for drinking during the transition into Spring.

This medium-bodied white is sold unoaked and yet still retains a complex flavour profile; drinkers will detect apple, pear, peach and almond gently balanced by a citrusy exterior, with Italian bottles airing on the dryer side. Furthermore, its overall silkiness irrespective of what region it comes from makes it suitable for pairing with zesty dishes like seafood or fish, particularly sushi or ceviche. You don’t even have to travel far to obtain a glass of some of Italy’s most prized Pinot Grigio; simply order from retailers like Wine Online whose adventurers do the hunting for you.

One bottle they recommend is the Pinot Grigio Terre di Chieti by Fontamara, vintage 2016 from Abruzzo Italy. The wine is full, round and rich, with excellent minerality, acidity and intense flavours. It’s sweet for an Italian Pinot, with lush aromas of orange blossoms and honey with apricot, apple and spice on the palate. Pair this selection with cured meats, rich fish, and soft cheeses. For something from the Veneto region, try the Poggio Bracco Pinot Grigio by Terre Gaie, vintage 2016. This winemaking estate is located in the village of Vo’ Euganeo, between the towns of Padova and Vicenza; the hilly region where the winery is situated is known for its long winemaking tradition and offers great climate for the development of this grape. The wine emerges fine and delicate, with a touch of spice on the nose, finishing fresh and full-bodied.

To contrast with the fruitier selections, Veneto is also home to the Pinot Grigio IGT delle Venezie by Cantine Salvalai, vintage 2016. This winery has been boasting quality wines since the late nineteenth century and the landscape with hills overlooking the famous city of Verona has over a thousand-year-old wine-growing tradition. This wine is a beautiful deep straw yellow, boasting flower aromas and finishing dry and savory. This bottle and the above are all offered at great value; you can even have them shipped to your door in as little as 1-4 business days.

  • I love a good Pinot Grigio. I can’t drink reds for some reason, I get terrible headaches from it. Have never tried this one.
