How to Cope with Work-Related Stress at Home

Are you finding it hard to relax at home? Maybe you want to unwind but you just don’t quite know where to start. Either way, the first thing you need to do is work out how stress is affecting you, so you can take steps to stop it from doing so in the future. If you want to find out more then take a look below.

Be Aware of How Stress Affects You

This may sound a bit too simple, but one of the things you can do is focus on how stress is affecting you. If you feel emotionally exhausted and if you are pessimistic at the end of the day, then this will impact your mental health. Studies have been done and they have found that there is a potential link between work-related stress and anxiety. Some of the signs of stress include low energy, insomnia, changes in appetite and even digestive issues. You may also experience a rapid heart rate, poor self-esteem and even sweating. If you feel yourself feeling these symptoms more then jot them down in a journal or a notebook, so you can monitor how you are feeling, and take steps when necessary.

Recharge when you Can

Taking a few minutes of personal time during a hectic day can help you to stop burnout more than you realize. Listening to an interesting podcast between meetings or even something simple like watching a funny video can help you to get the relaxing pauses you need during the day. It’s also important that you take time when you need it, by disconnecting from your phone during the evening. If you can do this then you will soon find that you can melt the stress away. If you want to unwind, then it’s worth visiting sites such as Gawby, as they have a ton of movie trailers available. You can pick out something to watch during the evening and commit yourself that as long as the movie is on, you’re not going to check your phone or answer any emails.

Balance your Work and Personal Life

Being available, all around the clock will burn you out. It’s important to create clear boundaries between your work and home life so you can avoid potential stress.  Part of this means setting time aside for socializing, so you can then establish rules for when you are going to take phone calls or answer emails.

Get a Good Support Network

Another thing you need to do is get a good support network. You need to keep in touch with your trusted friends where possible. If you are finding it hard to deal with a challenging week at work, then take the time to ask your parent and teacher friends to see if they can take the kids to school for you, or to find out if you can carpool to work. Having a solid support network is a great way for you to offload some of your responsibilities so you can make more time for yourself when you need it.

  • Some people thrive on stress, as long is it is balanced. When I was at work, for the most part I loved it – or thought I did. However, when I left, I realised how much it had affected me. I was wired all the time. I thought the stress was productive, but in retrospect it wasn’t. I was on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and could never switch off. That was not healthy. What a difference to my life when I left!

It may not be easy, but one shouldn’t bring work at home – they should always be separated.
