As a homeowner we all want to create a bright and spacious living space that everyone can enjoy. Sadly, as much as we try to make adjustments to our home, the location and direction of the windows can have a huge impact.
If you have a largely north facing house you may notice how dark your home feels during the day. This is because the sun rises in the east, shines in the south, and sets in the west: meaning you will likely not gain much natural sunlight. So, how can you bring light into the home when this is the case?
Today we are going to take a look at the changes that can make to a dark room bright again, and bring it to life.
- Start with white
If you know much about the color spectrum, you will know that when all colors are done it together they create white. White is a combination of all light sources and it reflects all light back into its surroundings. This means if you want to brighten up a room you should bring lots of white to the space. White walls or furnishings can reflect light even when there isn’t much in the way of light, and will make a big difference to your house.
- Install wall lamps
Floor and table lamps are popular choices for the home but to really brighten up your space a wall lamp is ideal. You can find many wonderful wall lamps online and once installed with a cool white light bulb it will make a huge difference to your room.
- Cool with blue
Natural light is cool compared to the yellow toned bulbs we are familiar with in the home. If you don’t want to buy a whole set of cool white bulbs for the home, you can counteract the warm dark yellow tone with blues. Bring some blue furnishings and features into the home and these will balance out the warmth to create a natural light feel.
- Accessorize with black
So, you want to make your dark room brighter… black might seem like the opposite of useful. However, small hints of black in the brightest areas of the home helps to create contrast and that idea of strong light. It will trick your mind into feeling like the home is brighter than it is.
- Swap your light-bulbs
We have already mentioned cool white light-bulbs a few times above but if you really want to make a dark home feel bright this should be a serious switch to consider. Swap the yellow tone for bright white and immediately you will see your home in a new light… literally.
- Use blinds
Curtains, although trendy, can also take up space in the room and make the space feel cramped and dark. Try making the swap by installing Next Day Blinds that will take up much less room and will provide a more subtle effect. Blinds are wonderful and they are incredibly easy to clean if you get plastic vertical ones!
